Many people go for oil paintings because this is quite traditional and a
well known material. Oils give rich colours and texture which is quite an
exciting finish to look at.
Acrylics are similar to oils and are fast drying which benefits someone
who needs a portrait made quickly.
Watercolours are fun, bright and give a more sketchy finish.
Gouache paint is similar to watercolour but it has an opaque nature.
Soft pastels create a rough raw look to work, still capturing beauty.
Charcoal is black and white, a cheaper and quick material to use to
create a drawing.
Pencil or graphite is also black and white and can give a lot of detail
being such a thin material to use. It is cheaper and quick to create
work with.
